FAQ - User Account/Password

1. How do I create a user account for the online application platform?

  • In order to submit an online application to TH Köln, you need to create a user account by clicking on the "Create Account" tab. You can find this tab in the left-hand navigation bar.

    • Information regarding applicants for DoSV degree programs:
      We recommend that you use the same email address while registering on our online application platform as well as on the online platform offered by hochschulstart.de.

  • Once you have created an account, you will receive your login information by email. Please note that it may take some time for this email to appear in your inbox. You may also need to check your spam folder.

  • Please log in to your account once you have received your login information. You will be prompted to change your initial password. From then on, please use your new password to log in to your account.

  • Please note that you may not create more than one user account.

2. I created a user account for the online application platform but I have not received an email with my login details. What do I have to do now?

Please note that it may take some time for this email to appear in your inbox. Please also check your spam folder. If you have not received an email with your login information within 3 hours of registering, please contact our support.

Your username is your email address that you used to create your account.

Please note that it may take some time for this email to appear in your inbox. Please also check your spam folder. If you have not received an email with your login information within 3 hours of registering, please contact our support.

7. I cannot log in with my login details. What should I do?

Please verify that you entered the correct user name and password. Remember that your password is case sensitive. If you entered the correct user name and password but still cannot login, please request a new password using the "Forgot Password" button. Your username is your email address that you used to create your account.



8. My email address has changed, i.e. I no longer use the email address that is stored with my account. What can I do?

Please contact our support and provide your new email address. We will update your information in our system as quickly as possible and use your new address for all email communication with you. Your new email address will also be your new user name for the online application platform.

9. I already created a user account during an earlier application period but I can no longer log in with my login details. What do I need to do to submit an application?

User accounts are only active for the current application period and automatically become inactive afterwards. Please create a new user account using the "Create Account" tab in the left-hand navigation bar.

10. When I tried to create a new user account I received a message that my email address is already in use and/or that an account in my name already exists. What do I need to do to create an account?

Please verify if you used a different email address when you created your account. If this is the case but you no longer remember your login information, please refer to question 4. If this is not the case, please contact our support.

FAQ - Online Application

1. How do I submit an application via the online application platform?

Once you have created your user account (see question 1), you can start your online application as follows:

  • MY DATA
  • Once you are logged in you will be automatically directed to the "My Data" section. Please answer the three questions below:

    • Citizenship: Please select from the drop down menu whether you are a German citizen, an EU/EEA citizen or if you hold a different citizenship.

      • Exception: If you are not a citizen of an EU/EEA member state and obtained your Higher Education Entrance Qualification outside of Germany but you are entitled to apply under the same regulations as German citizens (in accordance with section 2(2) of the Regulation on the allocation of study places in North Rhine-Westphalia [in German] - external website), e.g. because you are married to a German or EU citizen, please enter your spouse's citizenship. If you are offered admission you will need to present proof at the time of enrollment, e.g. by submitting your marriage certificate.

    • Higher Education Entrance Qualification: Please select from the drop down menu whether you have obtained your Higher Education Entrance Qualification (HEEQ) in Germany or abroad. If you studied at a German Studienkolleg and passed an assessment test, please select "Foreign HEEQ/Studienkolleg".

    • Undergraduate Degree: please select from the drop down menu if you have already graduated (or if you will graduate shortly) from an undergraduate program (e.g. a Bachelor's program) at an institution of higher education in Germany or abroad. If you do not hold an undergraduate degree (e.g. if you recently completed your secondary school education and now want to enroll in a Bachelor's program), please select "I do not have an undergraduate degree".

    Click on the "Save" button in the top right corner once you have answered all three questions. Below the questions, the button "Search in courses offered" will appear. Click on this button to select the program you want to apply to.

    Resetting the three initial questions:
    Please note: Once you have selected a degree program, you can only reset your answers to the above mentioned questions if you delete your application(s). Once you have submitted an application you can no longer reset your answers. Please double-check if you have answered the questions correctly. Please contact our support if you need help editing your answers.

  • SEARCH IN COURSES OFFERED
  • Please select the program you wish to apply to from the drop down list and click on the "Search" button. You can also refine your search according to certain criteria (e.g. restricted or unrestricted admission, type of degree).

    Additional information regarding your selected program is available from the Program Overview on the website of TH Köln. If you wish to apply right away, click on the "Apply" button to start your online application.

  • SECTIONS of the online application form
  • Please complete the different sections of the online application form. Carefully read the information provided and follow the instructions.

    You can use the following buttons to navigate through the online application form:

    • Next: This button will take you to the next page. All information you have entered will be saved automatically.

    • Save: Click on this button to save all entries you made on the current page. We recommend to save your entries if you want to submit your application at a later time (please make sure you meet the application deadline!) or if you remain on one page for an extended period of time.

    • Save and open applications summary: Saves all entries on the current page and takes you to the applications summary. In the applications summary the individual sections of your online application form are listed.

    • Applications summary: This button takes you to the applications summary without saving the information you entered on the current page(!). In the applications summary the individual sections of your online application form are listed.

  • CHECK FOR COMPLETENESS and SUBMIT APPLICATION
  • Once you have completed all sections and answered all questions, please click on "Save and open applications summary":


    • Click on the "Check for completeness" button in the bottom part of the page. The entire online application form is then displayed on one page. Questions which have not been answered yet are displayed in red.

    • If necessary, click on "Applications summary" and edit the respective fields.

    • If your application is complete you can submit it by clicking on the "Submit" button.

    You will receive a confirmation email. Please be advised that it may take some time before this email will appear in your inbox.

    Please note: Once it has been submitted, you can no longer edit your application. We therefore ask you to check your application carefully before submitting it. If you need assistance editing your application, please contact our support.

2. I can no longer edit the section "My Data". Why?

3. Can I submit more than one online application?

Yes, you can submit more than one application with a single user account. However, you may not create more than one user account.

4. I would like to have a confirmation that I submitted my online application. Is that possible?

Yes. Once you have submitted your online application you will automatically receive a confirmation email. The confirmation is sent to the email address you used to create your user account. You can also check the status of your application in the "My applications" section of your online application.

5. I have not received a confirmation email after submitting my online application. What now?

Please note that it may take some time for this email to appear in your inbox. Please also check your spam folder. If you have not received a confirmation email within 3 hours of submitting your application, please contact our support.

It is also possible that you have not submitted your application yet. Please check the status of your application.

6. I recently moved and would like to provide my current mailing address or the mailing address I provided is wrong. How can I update my mailing address?

Please log in to the online application platform and click on the "My Address" tab. Then select "Modify Address" in the lefthand navigation. You can now review and, if necessary, update your mailing address. Please take note of the additional information provided in this section.

7. I submitted my online application and only realized afterwards that some information I provided is not correct. What do I have to do now?

8. I have completed a vocational training. How can I enter relevant information in my online application?

The completion of a vocational training is irrelevant to your application to TH Köln and does not affect your chances of admission. Thus, this kind of information does not need to be supplied through the online application platform.

If you obtained your Higher Education Entrance Qualifciation (HEEQ) (e.g. the German Abitur) before July 16, 2007 and if you completed a vocational training PRIOR to obtaining your HEEQ you may submit an "Application for a waiting period bonus" along with your application to a Bachelor's program with restricted admission. This application form is available in the "Special Applications" section of the online application platform.

9. How can I enter relevant information regarding internships in my online application?

It is not possible to submit information regarding internships via the online application platform. Usually, respective evidence is to be presented at the time of enrollment.

10. Do I need to/can I upload supporting documents in the "My Documents" section of the online application platform?

No, you cannot upload any documents to TH Köln's online application platform. A number of documents (e.g. your Letter of Admission/Rejection) is available for download in the "My Documents" section.

FAQ - Special Applications

1. How do I submit a special application (e.g. in cases of hardship) for a degree program with restricted admission?

You can submit a special application immediately after submitting your online application or at a later time (make sure you meet the deadline.). Select the application you have submitted and scroll down to the "Special Applications" section. Select the appropriate application and proceed as you did with your online application, then submit your special application electronically.

You can submit more than one special application. Please be advised that you are required to submit certain documents by mail in addition to the application you submitted electronically. For additional information, please refer to the "Special Applications" section.

We do not send confirmation emails for special applications. To check the status of your special application, please log in to the online application platform. The status of your special application (e.g. submitted, received) is available in the "Special Applications" section.

FAQs - Letter of Admission/Rejection

1. When and how will I receive my Letter of Admission or Rejection?

You will receive your Letter of Admission or Rejection electronically, i.e. by email (as pdf attachment). Additionally, your Letter of Admission or Rejection will be available for download in the "My Documents" section of the online platform.

We highly recomend that you save the Letter of Admission/Rejection on your private computer, since you may need it at a later point in time, for example when you are required to present it at different administrations. The Letter of Admission/Rejection is expected to be available on the online application platform till the middle of March for the summer semester and till the middle of October for the winter semester. The dates are subject to change.

Delivery times:

  • Bachelor's programs with unrestricted admission: within a few days of submitting your online application

  • Bachelor's Programs with restricted admission:
    • Winter semester: approx. in early August
    • Summer semester: approx. in early February
    Please note: Not all letters are sent out on the same date but over a period of one to two weeks.

  • Master's programs with restricted and unrestricted admission:
    • Winter semester: approx. in early August
    • Summer semester: approx. in early February

2. How do I apply for admission with advanced standing?

Applications for admission with advanced standing cannot be submitted via the online application platform. Additional information is available from our website [in German].

3. How do I log out of the online application platform?

We recommend to log out of the online application platform after each session to protect your private data. To log out you can either click on the "Logout" tab or on the power button in the top right corner. After logging out you will be automatically directed to the homepage of the online application platform with the "Log in" and "Forgot password" buttons.

4. Where are TH Köln's night mailboxes located?

The locations of the night mailboxes are as follows:

  • Südstadt Campus:
    The (silver) night mailbox is located on the left-hand side of the main entrance of the building in Claudiusstrasse 1, 50678 Köln.

  • Deutz Campus:
    The night mailbox is located on the 2nd level of the building, right in front of the main entrance of the building in Betzdorfer Strasse 2, 50679 Köln-Deutz.

  • Gummersbach Campus:
    The nightmailbox is located on the ground floor, across from the cafeteria. The address is Steinmüllerallee 1, 51643 Gummersbach.

FAQ - Dialog-oriented service procedure (DoSV)

1. What is the Dialog-oriented service procedure (DoSV)?

The admissions process for some Bachelor's programs with restricted admission (admissions to the first program semester only) is coordinated by hochschulstart.de. Each participating institution of higher education individually organizes the admissions process for their respective programs in accordance with current regulations.

Not all institutions of higher education participate in DoSV. An institution may participate with all its programs with restricted admission or just with a few selected programs. Please refer to hochschulstart.de's application portal (section "Courses offered") for information on which institutions participate in DoSV and with which programs. 2. I am an international applicant and I obtained my entrance qualification outside of Germany. Do I need to register with hochschulstart.de?

International applicants with foreign entrance qualifications please note:

You do not need to register with hochschulstart.de. In addition to your online application to TH Köln you are requried to submit your academic document to the University Application Service for International Students (uni-assist) for review.
